Program Offered: 4 years B.A/B.Sc Hons & Hons with Research in Geography.
 

 

Facilities:

The Department of Geography of T.H.K. Jain College comprises of three laboratories-

• Physical Laboratory
• Remote sensing and GIS laboratory
• Cartography Laboratory

The College ensures regular maintenance of these well-equipped laboratories . Students use the laboratories for learning purposes, hands-on practical, dissertation work and other academic activities.

Physical Geography Laboratory:

•  Physical Geography Laboratory is used for research and teaching-learning of Lithology, Climatology and Pedology.
• This laboratory contains all Topographical Maps, Aerial Photography and Satellite Imagery for landscape survey purpose.
• It contains Geomorphological models needed for understanding different concepts.
• The laboratory has a rich collection of different specimens of Minerals, Metallic Ores, Rocks and Rock-forming minerals.
• The laboratory is well-equipped with apparatus like Rain Gauge, Thermometer, Barometer and Hygrometer for measuring rainfall, mean daily temperature, air pressure and relative humidity respectively.
• It also contains pH meter and Refractometer to determine soil pH and salinity with other supporting equipments.

Remote sensing and GIS laboratory:

• Remote sensing and GIS Laboratory conducts studies on various aspects using remote sensing and GIS techniques.
• The laboratory is equipped with software for Remote sensing, Digital Image Analysis and Geographical Information System.
• The laboratory is equipped with complete software (QGIS) for vector and raster data processing and the analysis is done by s 16 computers.
• Research Activities are related to digital interpretation of multispectral and hyperspectral satellite imagery (supervised and unsupervised classification) and imagery of high spatial and temporal resolution.
• The laboratory is also equipped with GPS to determine location in latitude, longitude and altitude.
• The laboratory contains Mirror Stereoscope for viewing a stereoscopic pair of separate images, depicting left-eye and right-eye views of the same scene as a three-dimensional image.

Cartography Laboratory:

•  Cartography Laboratory has been a centre for innovation for map design, interactive visualization and geographical thinking.
• In Cartography Laboratory, Geographical or Statistical data is represented in forms of different Cartograms and also display geographical concepts such as density, distribution, gradients through Thematic Maps.
• The laboratory specializes in the development of qualitative and quantitative research skill. Practical methods and techniques in Cartography include Quantitative and Statistical Techniques, Field Survey Method etc.
• The laboratory is equipped with various important instruments such as 'Dumpy Level' to determine relative height and distance among different locations of a surveying land. Prismatic Compass determines the bearing of traversing and included angles between them, waypoints and direction.Theodolite measures the horizontal and vertical angles which is determined with great precision with other supports like Ranging Rod, Staff, Ground Pin, Measuring Tape etc.
• It is also equipped with Abney Level to measure degrees, percent of grade and topographic elevation, Clinometer to measure the slope and angle of a specific terrain, Planimeter to compute the area of any given plan and Laser Distance Meter to measure distance through laser light and Generating Globe to transform of the spherical surface onto a plain surface.
